Disappearance of public telephone in Singapore

In recent years, the public telephone are getting lesser in Singapore. Numerous amount of the telephone were removed by the authorities. As technology are getting more and more advance, many people nowadays have their own mobile device to contact their loved ones, which therefore the needs of having telephone in public places are not very demanding now. However, I believe there is still a need to have public telephones in public places. There are still people who don’t have their own mobile device. Few examples like the children whose parent refuse to give them a phone for the reason that they are too young, the low income foreign workers who can’t afford to purchase a phone, and the elderly who don’t know how to use mobile phone.

For their cases, the only option for them is to use public telephone to contact their family or friends when hanging out away from home. Or otherwise, use the telephone at home. However, some elderly in Singapore does not own any telephone and telephony line service at home. My elder neighbor is one example; she feels that it’s unnecessary to sign up for the line services as she don’t use the phone very often. When she wants to place a call, she prefer to use the public telephone because it is much cheaper.
Public telephone not only benefits these people, it also helps people when their phone’s battery had dried out. If they needs to contact someone urgently at the moment, they can use the public telephone. The public telephone in Singapore were removed massively in recent years. Thus, increasing the difficulties to find them. Although they are not demanding nowadays, but I hope the authorities can stop removing them and install an appropriate amount of telephone in public places that are easier for the elderly, children and foreign worker to reach.
